Student Spotlight: Selina Davis, Class of 2026
Howard University College of Pharmacy Spotlight Selina Davis, Class of 2026
This month, we spotlight Selina Davis, a Doctor of Pharmacy candidate at Howard University College of Pharmacy (HUCOP), Class of 2026. Born and raised in Suffolk, Virginia, Selina earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University. We highlight her to celebrate her awards and research achievements, while showcasing the student pharmacy journey and the many rewarding paths it can lead to.
Her passion for healthcare began early, inspired by her grandparents’ health journeys. When her grandfather suffered a heart attack, Selina witnessed firsthand the critical role of patient-centered care and clear communication. This experience ignited her determination to pursue an education in pharmacy.
In 2019, Selina began working as a community pharmacy technician at Walgreens. For over six years, she has assisted patients with prescriptions, supported inventory management, and contributed to a smooth team workflow. In 2022, she joined HUCOP, drawn to the opportunities offered in the nation’s capital, where students engage in advocacy and have a voice in shaping policies that impact pharmacists nationwide.
Selina’s time at HUCOP has deepened her understanding of the science behind pharmacy, as well as “the art of medicine.” Clinical rotations have allowed her to apply classroom knowledge directly to patient care, strengthening her commitment to treating each patient, understanding their unique lifestyles, and tailoring care to optimize outcomes.
Mentorship has also played a pivotal role in her journey. Dr. Malaika Turner Kirk, PharmD, MPH, encouraged Selina’s participation in the Wyoming College of Pharmacy Health Equity Leadership Program, where she gained insights into the challenges faced by rural communities and pharmacy deserts. Dr. Dhakrit (Jesse) Rungkitwattanakul, PharmD BCPS FNKF, introduced her to research, offering guidance that expanded her perspective on patient care. Dr. Tiffany L. Lathan Smith, PhD, selected her to mentor students through the Pharm Step 2 Program, where Selina helped create a supportive environment for other future pharmacists.
Earlier this year, Selina won an award and presented research on kidney treatment during the 34th Annual Fellows Research Forum at the National Kidney Foundation Serving the Capital Region. An experience she describes as both unexpected and affirming of her decision to attend HUCOP.
Though her grandparents are now at rest, Selina honors them through her accomplishments and remains motivated by their memory. She is determined to improve patient care, provide patients with answers, and continue serving as an advocate for those who need one.
Her advice to others:
“Become the advocate and voice for those who are limited.”
When asked what motivates her, Selina shared:
“I tell myself. Keep going, you’re going to make it. Don’t limit yourself and hold onto your village, they'll help keep you going.”
Selina hopes to conclude her Howard University College of Pharmacy journey with an international rotation, carrying forward the College’s tradition of excellence and C.A.R.E. across the globe. We are proud to celebrate her achievements and look forward to seeing the countless lives she will impact as a future pharmacy leader.
