Howard University was founded in 1867. Soon after, Pharmacy instruction at Howard University began in the “Department of Medicine” in 1868. The initial program, held in the evening, offered students a “knowledge of the art and science of pharmacy”. As a result of this program, in 1870, the first graduate of Howard University, James Thomas Wormley, received the Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical Department. The research vision at Howard University Health Sciences is to expand and develop research in the biomedical sciences to its full potential, with an emphasis on innovation that advocates for the elimination of health disparities. Because a major component of health disparities are caused by non-medical and health care factors, research emphasis will focus on social determinants of health and clinical effectiveness research.
The Howard University Health Sciences (HUHS) enterprise includes the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. Since its inception, the HUHS has conferred over 25,000 doctoral and professional degrees to scientists and health care professionals, the majority whom are from underrepresented and disadvantaged populations.
