International APPE Rotation

Howard University College of Pharmacy International Rotations program prepares student pharmacists to become global citizens who value diversity and culture in healthcare.
This program offers structured, two-way international training opportunities that combine mentoring with hands-on practice experiences, all designed to positively impact patient care and clinical outcomes both locally and globally.
Beyond rotations abroad, HUCOP faculty lead research projects around the world and actively involve student pharmacists in their international work. Through full cultural immersion, students gain the knowledge and awareness needed to deliver culturally competent care and bring a global perspective to their daily practice as pharmacists.

FAQs
How long are HUCOP International APPEs?
International APPEs are the same duration as other APPEs in the U.S., lasting 5 weeks.
Is travel time included in the rotation?
We allow 1–2 days of flexible travel time at the start and end of the rotation. This gives students time to fly to their destination and adjust to different time zones before beginning their rotations.
Is financial aid provided for travel?
Howard University College of Pharmacy covers the cost of airfare. Students are responsible for housing, meals, ground transportation, visa fees, baggage fees, and other miscellaneous expenses.
How are students prepared for international rotations?
All students complete a mandatory orientation, covering travel logistics, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and ethics while overseas.
Will I be traveling alone?
We aim to send students in pairs or small groups. While it is rare, students may occasionally travel alone.
Are there language barriers?
Most host countries conduct pharmacy practice in English, or preceptors are able to communicate in English. In cases where English is not common, translators or fellow student pharmacists assist as needed. Language has not been a barrier for the majority of rotations.
How are International APPEs graded?
International APPEs are graded the same as all APPEs. Preceptors complete midpoint and final evaluations online.
How is my rotation country determined?
Students rank their country preferences on the application. The International Committee assigns placements based on preferences and site availability. Flexibility increases your chances of placement.
How should I prepare for my rotation?
Students are encouraged to research their host country, including culture, food, language, and religious practices, to feel comfortable upon arrival. Additional guidance may be provided by HUCOP as needed.
How much will this cost?
Estimated expenses typically range from $3,000–$6,000, covering airfare, housing, meals, ground transportation, and other miscellaneous costs.
