Eligibility for Howard University College of Pharmacy Fellowship

To be eligible for a Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship at HUCOP, candidates should have graduated with PharmD or PhD, in Pharmaceutical Sciences or related discipline, or will be by the start of the Fellowship. Candidates must hold a degree as of July 1st or the Fellowship term.

  1. Letter of Intent (LOI) should include the name of the company and position(s) of interest. For example, Company X/Howard University and Position X. 
  2. Candidates can be considered for multiple positions and should upload a LOI for each position of interest in a single application on the Workday portal. 
  3. All materials are uploaded in a single application-- CV's are uploaded  to the CV link and all other documents (Letters of Intent, Letters of Reference, Transcripts) are loaded under certifications in the Workday portal.

FAQ for Fellowship Candidates:

(1): What is the Howard University Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship (HUPIF), and how does it differ from other programs?

A: The HUPIF Program has partnerships with over 13 biopharmaceutical companies, and we provide professional development, practical academic experiences, and clinical experiences where appropriate as part of the fellowship. Howard University College of Pharmacy (HUCOP) is the only college of pharmacy in our nation’s capital and is close to all regulatory bodies including the FDA. The fellowship program strives to be a premier program by offering opportunities in teaching, learning, research, leadership, and service locally and globally. Your experience during the fellowship can be customized based on your professional aspirations and needs.

(2): What qualifications do I need to apply for a pharmaceutical fellowship?

A: A recent graduate from a PharmD or PhD program or will obtain a PharmD or PhD and is eligible to work in the United States by June 1, 2025.

(3): Can I submit multiple applications at the same time?

A: Yes. When completing your application, include a separate letter of intent (LOI) clearly stating each company/functional area you are applying to. Please refer to question 7 on how to name each LOI.

(4): Can I apply for multiple functional areas within the same company?

A: Yes. Please submit a letter of intent for each functional area.

(5): Can you provide details about the application timeline, including deadlines and important dates?

A: The general deadline to submit your application is November 23rd, 2024. However, Genentech, AstraZeneca, Bayer deadlines will be earlier, please refer to their brochures and open house.

(6): What documents are required for the application?

A: You will need to submit your transcript, CV (curriculum vitae), 3 recommendation letters and a letter of intent for each functional area/company you apply to.

(7): How do I upload my documents?

A: Step-by-Step Procedure for Uploading Documents: 

  1. Ensure that documents are compressed to a max 5MB Size per document uploaded.
  2. Prepare Documents: Ensure that all your documents are in PDF format before uploading.
  • CV: Save your CV as a single PDF document.
  • LOI: Complete a separate LOI for each position to which you are applying.
    (Save each LOI using the format:
    LOI_Company_FunctionalArea_CandidateName.pdf)
  • Transcript: Save your transcript as a separate PDF document.
  • Letters of Recommendation (LORs): Save your LORs as pdf documents.

  • CV: Upload your CV as one attachment.

  • LOI: Upload each LOI as separate files

(8): If my recommendation writers prefer to send my recommendation letters directly to the program, where should I have them send it?

A: Please have them email the letters directly to pharmacy.fellowship@howard.edu with the applicant's name in the subject of the email. 

(9): Is prior pharmaceutical/research experience necessary to be considered for the fellowship?

A: All qualified candidates are screened whether they have experience or not. 

(10): Are international students eligible to apply for the pharmaceutical fellowship?

A: If international students have a work visa that covers the time that they will be in the fellowship program, then they are eligible to apply to our program. Please note that there may be other requirements, and you should speak directly with HUPIF leadership. 

(11): Is there an interview process, and if so, what kind of questions can I expect during the interview?

A: Yes, there will be multiple interviews during the process and please expect behavioral and experiential type questions. 

(12): Are there opportunities for networking and professional development during the fellowship?

A: Yes, fellows attend various professional conferences and work on interprofessional projects. 

(13): Is the duration of the fellowship 2 years or 1 year?

A: Some fellowships are 2 years, and some are 1 year. Each company and functional area will specify their exact duration. 

(14): Are there opportunities for publication or presentation of research findings during or after the fellowship?

A: Yes, one requirement is for each fellow to work on a publication and present their findings at a professional meeting or conference. 

(15): Will I be offered health insurance?

A: Yes. 

(16): If I submitted an application but my documents weren’t submitted properly or forgot to attach one of my documents, how can I ensure that those documents get submitted?

A: Please email those documents ASAP to pharmacy.fellowship@howard.edu. Please refer to question 7 on how to save your documents. 

(17): When can a candidate expect to hear of a final decision?

A: Different companies have varying timelines. During your interview, please ask for the date they plan to select their final candidate. 

(18): On average, how many interviews can a candidate expect to go through?

A: This is company-specific but expect 2-3 rounds of interviews. 

(19): Will interviews be conducted at MidYear?

A: This will be based on the company, and you will be contacted with that information during the process. 

(20): What classes are fellows expected to teach to get the teaching certificate?

A: This depends on your functional area and will be assigned as appropriate. 

(21): Are the fellowships remote or in person?

A: This depends on the requirements of the company and functional area. Some positions are remote, hybrid or fully onsite.  

(22): What are professional development opportunities for the fellows?

A: Fellows have access to attend courses at the Howard University campuses, gain PMP certification, teaching certification, and access to licensure resources among other things. There are other professional development resources that will be provided to fellows at their respective companies based on their functional area.
