A Welcome from Our Dean

Dean's Welcome
Dean Akiyode Headshot

Welcome to the Howard University College of Pharmacy (HUCOP)—the only institution of its kind located in the heart of our nation’s capital. Since 1868, we have been committed to providing exceptional pharmacy education and shaping leaders who serve with excellence both in America and across the globe.

As Dean of this distinguished institution, I am honored to lead a community defined by innovation, purpose, and service. At HUCOP, we believe in the power of Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (C.A.R.E.)—values that guide everything we do and unite our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners in advancing the pharmacy profession.

This past year has been one of growth, innovation, and achievement. Our enrollment continues to rise, and we are introducing new and forward-looking programs that reflect the evolving landscape of healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences. These include new curricular tracks in Leadership and Entrepreneurship, Data Science and Analytics, and the Pharmaceutical Industry, launching in Spring 2026. These pathways will allow students to tailor their studies, gain specialized expertise, and pursue diverse career trajectories in pharmacy and beyond.

In addition, we are proud to announce the creation of the Online Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Pathway, launching in Fall 2026, which will expand access to the hallmark of a Howard University education. This program offers students nationwide the same rigorous curriculum, mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities as our on-campus students—extending the “Howard Experience” far beyond Washington, D.C.

The Pharmacy Technician Program, in partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES), addresses the national shortage of pharmacy technicians and opens new doors of opportunity for D.C. residents. We also continue to strengthen our Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program, expanding opportunities for advanced training in key areas of drug development, regulatory affairs, and industry-focused pharmacy practice.

Our impact extends far beyond the classroom. Through international rotations, research collaborations, and community partnerships, we continue to advance global health and provide students with enriching experiences that prepare them to lead in a complex and evolving healthcare environment.

This past year, we were also honored to receive ACPE Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) Accreditation with Commendation—a recognition that distinguishes HUCOP as the first HBCU and one of only a few programs in the D.C. and DMV region to earn this distinction. This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to maintaining and advancing the highest standards of pharmacy education and practice.

The Howard University College of Pharmacy’s success is a collective effort made possible through the dedication of our faculty, students, alumni, and partners who share our mission to improve healthcare outcomes and expand access to quality care. Together, we embody the spirit of Excellence in Truth and Service.

As we continue to build on our legacy and look toward the future, I invite you to explore our programs, initiatives, and stories that celebrate the strength of our Pharmily. The future of HUCOP is bright, and I am deeply inspired by the next generation of pharmacy leaders, innovators, scholars, and practitioners who will continue to make a lasting impact on healthcare and on the world.

When We C.A.R.E., We Excel.

Excellence in Truth and Service,

Ranti Akiyode, PharmD., BCPS
