Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) Program Description
Howard University College of Pharmacy is one of the oldest and top technology advanced schools/colleges of pharmacy in the United States. The success of the traditional program led to the development of an innovative Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) Program designed for practicing pharmacists. The salient features of the program are highlighted below:

The Howard University Non-traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) program normally requires a minimum of two years to complete. Eligible Pharmacists are admitted once a year as members of a cohort. Cohorts consist of not geographically bounded pharmacists who joined the program at the same time and will progress through it at the same pace. They must complete an application and fulfill all requirements of the program. The NTDP curriculum is learner-and competency-based and incorporates communication, problem solving, and critical thinking in all phases of the program.
Curriculum Description for Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy degree Program
Phase I - A 3-day long orientation to educational technology and fundamental clinical concepts. Pharmacists will participate in one Executive Weekend Seminar at Howard University College of Pharmacy. The seminar begins on Friday morning and adjourns Sunday afternoon. One of the objectives of the seminars is to familiarize the learners with technology (e.g. World Wide Web, e-mail, computer conferencing, and access to remote information databases) that students will utilize while enrolled in the program. Learners will also participate in hands-on workshops on physical assessment and Drug Information Resources, and pharmaceutics selected topics.
Phase II - A 18-month course of study divided into three semesters, which include Integrated Pharmacy Care and Science courses. The Integrated Pharmacy Care and Science sequence is a unique instructional model that Howard University has adopted in the NTDP curriculum. It involves the careful integration of Information, concepts, and practice techniques required of pharmacists seeking to implement pharmacy care. In contrast to traditional instructional delivery, which involves discrete pieces of information, the Integrated Pharmacy Care and Science approach provide the learner with a comprehensive set of modules that include pathophysiology, therapeutics, pharmacology, pharmacoepidemiology, and pharmacoeconomics. Each module contains realistic examples and practical suggestions for utilizing the material in pharmacy practice.
Phase III - Effective Cohort 22 (students starting the program in Fall 2023): The experiential education component of the program is the culmination of the program and allows for the development, implementation, and evaluation of various disease states, execution of medication therapy management programs, and other activities of pharmaceutical care. Students are required to complete up to 1440 hours during their experiential education rotations and are required to complete an ambulatory care experience, community experience, acute care/medicine experience, institutional/management experience, and complete electives. Pharmacists may be given credit for one (or more) rotations based upon an evaluation of their prior life experience/work history, including (but not limited to) - duties and performance in Clinical Patient Assessment, certifications obtained, recommendations, and required tasks at work.
