History
Pharmacy instruction at Howard University began in the “Department” of Medicine in 1868. The initial course held in the evening, offered students “knowledge of the art and science of pharmacy”. The College of Pharmacy has the distinct legacy of graduating the very first graduate student at Howard University in 1870; Dr. James Thompson Wormley.
Programs
The College of Pharmacy currently offers:
- four-year entry-level, Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) degree program
- five-year Pharm.D./MBA dual degree program
- BS/Pharm.D. program (with 14 feeder institutions)
The College also offers:
- Non-Traditional Pharm. D. degree program specific to registered pharmacists.
- M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences to applicants with a B.S. degree

Mission
The mission of Howard University College of Pharmacy is to provide pharmacy education of excellent quality to students possessing high academic, scholarship, and leadership potential, with particular emphasis upon the recruitment, retention, and graduation of promising African American and other ethnically diverse minority students.
The College fosters the creation of new knowledge through innovative research and scholarship, commitment to community service, continuous professional development, and dedication to superior pharmacy practice locally and globally.
About the Program
The Pharm. D. degree program provides students with professional knowledge and skills to perform at a high level of competence in providing pharmaceutical care and drug therapy in community and institutional settings. The curriculum includes courses in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, and clinical administrative pharmacy sciences.
Due to its location in Washington, DC, the School is able to utilize the resources from governmental agencies, private health care facilities, and other research institutions for training its students. Howard University College of Pharmacy is not only one of the oldest but is also one of the most technology-advanced schools of pharmacy in the United States.
Faculty
The College of Pharmacy has a cadre of dedicated faculty who are highly experienced in teaching, professional practice, and research.
Accreditation
The Pharm. D. degree programs are fully accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE), the national agency for accrediting pharmacy programs in the United States of America.
