Dr. Bisrat Hailemeskel’s international work started in 2003 when he travelled as a visiting professor with Ethiopian Health Professional Association in North America. He continued to serve in this capacity until he received a grant as Program Director form American International Health Alliance through PEPFAR/CDC/HERSA to promote pharmacy education in Ethiopia. He was the key person in establishing the Howard University-Addis Ababa University Twinning partnership program. Since then, he has traveled numerous times to Ethiopia to conduct training and provide consultation on pharmacy education. Over the past four years, he along with other faculty from Howard University assisted AAU School of Pharmacy to adopt a 5-year curriculum for undergraduate pharmacy education, a post graduate program in pharmacy practice, and helped establish the first drug information center in the country.
Dr. Hailemeskel has received numerous research grants from governmental and non-governmental institutions. He was the recipient of a 2007-2008 Fulbright Scholarship as a teacher/research fellow, a distinguished award from the US State Department to teach and conduct research in Africa. Dr. Hailemeskel received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Mayor of the City Government of Addis Ababa for his significant contribution. He received the “2010 Faculty of the Year” award from Howard Alumni Association.
Dr. Ettienne has taken his commitment to global health and health disparities to pursue international research in Ghana and Ethiopia. He has led groups of student research trainees in projects aimed at using pharmacogenomic testing to improve clinical decision support in comorbid depression, diabetes, asthma management, and the use of traditional medicine. His work resulted in him being sought to present at major conferences and he is leading an effort to build and maintain a genomic-guided registry at Howard University with the support of the District of Columbia Government. He is also passionate about regulatory affairs and is leading efforts to advance Regulatory Affairs and Policy Education in Partnership with the Food and Drug Administration and GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer Pharmaceutical companies.
